11-11 I Have Learned More

I Have Learned More

I have learned more from the crucifix than from any book.
—St. Thomas Aquinas

Nothing like His slave-fashioned Roman  cross—
This miniature one with stainless-steel gloss;
Those golden crosses in sanctuaries
Or marble ones rowed in cemeteries.
Just hard-edged, flat, wood or brass,
Crosses plain—bejeweled—and some simply crass.

Any cross has neat symmetry from
machine-cast and stamped geometry.

I studied a crucifix.

This Hebrew figurine shrouds

thorns stabbing

face contorted arms pinioned

ribs protruding

blood loss eyes piercing.

No question surpasses My God, my God . . .
No cross

will ever

ever look

the same.
