12-1 Can’t See Jesus’ Face

Can’t See Jesus’ Face

No Greek nose, no

shoulder-crested flaxen hair, no

Germanic cobalt eyes, no

Warner Sallman 1940 “Head of Christ”

dust framed in church parlors,

looking sideways—

No Galilean tan, no

Hebrew nose, no

piercing russet eyes, no

curly black hair, no

dust on His heard—

no wall-sized, stained-glass portrait

floodlit by sunlight Sunday mornings, no

yellow crown, rosy robe, no

clear palms with red spots—

at the food pantry they line

with open plastic and cloth bags

as we pack juice, cereal, beef stew cans,

toothpaste and at the counter

whose face looks at me?
