3-6 Like You Do

Saturday I attended an all-day poetry workshop, and in one we had a prompt to write one on “Like you…” Here’s mine.

Like You Do

My eyes absorb “Breaking News.”

Volleys of bullets blitzing bodies, bombs

raining flesh, the light of time

cracking cold cases, and another and

another e-mail scandal.

My teeth gnash.

Yellow-green stains my skin.

Intestines coil and constrict.

Fire storms incinerate houses, torrents gut gullies,

golf-ball hail dents metal roofs

until the last five minutes:

video clips. Good Samaritans

yanking her out of a fiery SUV,

reviving a kid entombed in pond ice

buying a scruffy soul a hamburger

and I wonder

like you do.
